Spinal Decompression Therapy and You

We’re thrilled to now be able to offer our patients this advanced treatment, with Finn Chiropractic Group being the only local chiropractor certified in the Kennedy Decompression Technique.

Spinal Decompression Therapy is safe and effective for treating conditions such as neck and low back pain, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and sciatica.  It’s a non-surgical, traction-based treatment that relieves pressure on the spine by stretching and decompressing the discs.  Patients, fitted with pelvic and thoracic harnesses, lie on a computerized controlled table.  Most patients find the sessions, which last about 20-30 minutes, to be comfortable.  Treatment typically involves 8-12 sessions, with many patients reporting pain relief after the first few sessions.

Individuals who could potentially benefit from this type of therapy are those who:
  • experience chronic back pain
  • suffer from failed back surgery syndrome
  • have bulging or herniated discs
  • have been diagnosed with facet syndrome, sciatica, or lumbar degenerative disc disease.
Some people are not good candidates for this therapy, including those who:
  • are pregnant
  • have suffered a new vertebra fracture
  • have titanium rods in their back
  • have been diagnosed with pelvic or abdominal cancer
  • have been diagnosed with severe osteoporosis
Additional information on this therapy can be obtained by contacting Finn Chiropractic Group at info@finnchiro.com.

Condition of the Month: Stress & Your Health

Traffic Jams. Paying Bills. Deadlines. Pesky Neighbors. These unpleasant or challenging situations create stress in our lives. So why is it some people deal with these stress situations better than others? The answer is complex and includes many factors from genetics to weather conditions, but an interesting study in The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics indicates that there is a relationship between chiropractic and the effect it can have on dealing with stress situations in your life.

This study revealed that nearly one in three patients viewed their lives as moderately to severely stressful, and more than 50% felt that stress had a moderate to severe impact on their health problems. Additionally, 71% of the patients indicated that it would be helpful if their chiropractor offered advice to help them cope with these stressful situations.

Communicating with your chiropractor about dealing with stress is the starting point, and you might be surprised to find that your chiropractor is full of sound advice on ways to effectively deal with stress in your life. Most people know that improving nerve and spinal function has a dramatic impact on improving emotional, mental, and physical function. Getting the most out of your chiropractic care may include talking to your chiropractor about effective strategies to deal with the stress in your life, so be sure to inform your chiropractor about your personal situation so your Doctor of Chiropractic can help you improve your health and wellness at maximum levels.

TREATMENT:
Chiropractic involves touch; this factor alone sets the stage for release of muscular tension. Your chiropractor administers of or a series of manipulations ("adjustments") to the spine and surrounding musculature. The adjustments may help the fatigue or stress by removing nerve irritation, releasing muscular tension and improving blood circulation.

To see if chiropractic may be able to help you, call (724)776-2673 today for a complimentary consultation.

Finn Chiropractic Group Visits U.S. Army Reserve Center In Cranberry Township

Dr. Shawn Finn and the staff at Finn Chiropractic Group recently spent their Saturday morning with some of the troops at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Cranberry Township, Pa.

Dr. Finn speaking to the men and women of the U.S. Reserves on December 4th.

Given the efforts of our military to secure our safety, Finn Chiropractic Group wished to reach out to the men and women of the Army Reserves and to educate them on ways to remain healthy. The visit took place during regular training hours on the morning of Saturday, December 4, 2010.

Dr. Finn was glad to spend time with the troops and to present them with his “How to Stay Young the First 100 Years” class.  The class gives detailed information about our body’s ability to function over the course of our lifespan and suggests ways that healthy eating, exercise, and regular visits to the chiropractor can greatly enhance your quality of life.

As a special thanks to the troops for their work, Finn Chiropractic Group offered each a free consultation with one of our doctors for themselves or a family member.

Dr. Finn summed up his visit by saying, “It really was an enjoyable and worthwhile visit for us. Anytime you are around members of the armed forces it really does reinforce why they are so important and why the sacrifices that they make must be recognized as well as respected.”

A short video of Dr. Finn’s reaction to his visit with the troops can be found on Finn Chiropractic Group’s Facebook page.

Subluxations: Defined

In simplest terms, a subluxation (a.k.a. Vertebral Subluxation) occurs when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of proper position and create pressure on or irritate the nerves within your spine. Spinal nerves are the nerves that are located between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves to other parts of the body.

How does this affect you?  Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you interfere with the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their innate abilities. In other words, some part of your body will not be working properly.

Some signs of subluxations include headaches, difficulty breathing, head colds, tingling or numbness of the fingers, neck and back pain, digestive issues, and numbness and pain in the legs.

It is the responsibility of the Doctor of Chiropractic to locate subluxations and to correct them. This is done through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically designed to correct the vertebral subluxations in your spine. Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of training to be the experts at correcting subluxations.

Would You Enjoy A Free Chair Massage?

Quite the question isn't is? We are not exaggerating, lying, fibbing, or doing anything of the sort when we say that you and your co-workers can enjoy a free 10 minute chair massage. Now you might ask, what is the catch, there has to be a catch right? Unfortunately, you are right, the catch is you need to relax! We all work extremely hard, and many of us play hard on top of it. This often leaves our body sore, aching, and even worse in constant pain. In fact, studies show that 80% of adults will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives, and one in every three adults will suffer from neck pain. These statistics aren't good!

Our mission at Finn Chiropractic is to reach 80% of the population, that is to educate them about chiropractic care and to let them know the difference it can make in their lives. A main avenue that we use to do this is to provide complimentary chair massages to the staffs at businesses in our area. An awesome opportunity right?

At this point you are probably saying I could go for that, many of my co-workers could too. We all know that person at work who a dictionary would list as "see also" when one looked up the word stress. So we have a mission for you. Talk to you supervisor and give our office a call to set up a date for Dr. Finn and our staff to visit your business.

You have nothing to lose, but your pain!
