The Importance of Maintenance Care

Hope everyone is enjoying a little less snowy February than last year! I was thinking about last winter and a stat that we realized. Finn Chiropractic Group was never busier than last March. We had a ton of injuries due to the snowstorms that rocked Pittsburgh in February 2010: slips, falls, shoveling and car accidents. Luckily no one was badly injured.

One thing stood out though. Not one of our maintenance patients, that is patients who come in 1 or 2 times per month for a regular adjustment, was injured. None of our maintenance patients threw their back out, none fell and got hurt, yet tons of people were calling in with injuries.

Coincidence? I don't think so! An event like this proves the necessity for regular, symptom free adjustments, as prescribed by your doctor, if you are to have a healthy spine. Remeber, the cause of your symptoms is a subluxation. But what caused that subluxation? Your daily activities, of course! The sitting at the computer, the snow shoveling or the repetitive lifting of a child can and does cause tension and stress to build in your muscles, pulling the spinal bones out of alignment, leading to symptoms!

The point of regular checkups is to never allow the spine to be pulled out, thus limiting your symptoms and long term limiting arthritis, degenerative changes and all around bad stuff. Think of maintenance care as dentistry for your spine. You don't wait for the tooth ache, right? You go evry six months to prevent the tooth ache, the drill and all the pain that goes along with it.

Same goes for your spine. Don't wait....Think Chiropractic before pain! Stay on your regular maintneance plan. If you have not been doing this call us right away. We will get you started on maintenance right away!

You never know when the next snowstorm is around the corner.....

Digital X-Ray

I wanted to let all of our patients know that, consistent with our belief that service and the highest level of care is a necessity at Finn chiropractic Group, we have added digital x-ray to our diagnostic services.

Digital x-ray enables our doctors to better diagnose the many spinal complaints that our patients present with. We will be able to show you your spine on a high resolution monitor with multiple views. Improved diagnostic quality will also in the long run minimize our patients' radiation exposure.

We believe that your health is our number one priority and we constantly strive to improve our procedures and services. Digital x-ray is just another way we will continue to maintain this standard.

Hope you are all having a great start to your new year! Be sure to include chiropractic in your yearly health check up!

Getting to Know Dr. Joe

Dr. Joe Shuluga recently joined Finn Chiropractic Group as an associate following his graduation from Palmer College of Chiropractic. He joins doctors Shawn Finn and Eric Pasierb and the rest of the staff at the clinic, which has been located in Seven Fields, Pa. for thirteen years.

We recently asked Dr. Shuluga a few questions to get to know him better.

1. Where did you study as an undergraduate and which chiropractic school did you attend?

Dr. S: I earned my B.S. in Biology from Youngstown State University in December 2006. I then attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, graduating cum laude in October 2010.

2. Please tell us about your family and where you grew up.

Dr. S: I grew up in small town called Lowellville OH, which is just outside of Youngstown Oh.  My parents are Leida and Joseph Shuluga and I have two siblings Katie Olson and Nicholas Shuluga.

3. Why did you choose to attend Chiropractic school?

Dr. S: My freshman year of high school football I received a neck injury, it just so happened that the team doctor was a local chiropractor and was able to keep me going for the season.  I continued care with the same chiropractor throughout high school and college and during my junior year of college I realized that I would love to give the same care that I was receiving for a lifetime.

4. Could you please describe the opportunity that you were given to treat in Vietnam during chiropractic school?

Dr. S: Through Palmer College I participated in a clinic abroad experience to spread and promote the word and touch of chiropractic care.  I chose to go to Vietnam, and there I spent 19 days across the Pacific in a foreign land, not knowing the language, treating patients.  It was the experience of a lifetime, and something I will never forget.  In many cases, I was the first doctor that any of these people had ever seen.  I saw it all, and I saw how the benefits of chiropractic care can touch the lives of so many, even if they were only to be seen once.  Even through the language barriers, hugs and thanks from patients will never be forgotten.

5. What are your interests and hobbies in your free time?

Dr. S: The Steelers! My family and I have had season tickets for the past 15 years and moving back to the area has giving me the opportunity to get back into spending time with my father and brother.

6. Would you mind explaining how you got hooked on DiBella's subs?

Dr. S: I was told by a patient that DiBella's subs are the best things around, skeptical at first I decided to go.  Now a days, anyone can see me in there on a Wednesday at lunch enjoying a good old fashioned turkey sub.  I don't know what they put in them down there, but I'm addicted.
